Royal Caribbean’s fourth Icon-class ship is afloat. Hero of the Seas was floated out at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland this week, eleven months before her scheduled debut from Miami in August 2027.
The float-out saw the ship’s dry dock filled with more than 90 million gallons of water overnight, after which Hero moved to the outfitting pier. She will spend the next year there being fitted out and readied for sea trials.
Casimir Lindholm, chief executive of Meyer Turku, said: “We are proud to see Hero of the Seas move one step closer to delivery.”
Trade title Cruise Industry News puts the ship at 250,800 gross tons, and reports that her glass dome was installed earlier this summer.
What’s on board
Royal Caribbean describes eight neighbourhoods, nine pools and 28 places to eat, including one new venue, the Orleans Parrish Supper Club. Accommodation runs up to the three-deck Ultimate Family Treehouse.
Crown’s Edge — part skywalk, part zip line, 154 feet above the sea — headlines the thrill side, alongside a new Coconut Cove pool and the adults-only Hideaway.
What it means for UK cruisers
Hero will sail seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami, with every sailing calling at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal’s private island in the Bahamas. For a British cruiser, that means a transatlantic flight before the holiday starts — the biggest ships in the world are being built for Florida, not Europe.
The Icon-class ship within realistic reach of the UK remains Legend of the Seas, confirmed to sail the Mediterranean again from Barcelona and Rome across summer 2027.
Sailings on Hero are open to book now. Worth knowing before you do: maiden seasons carry premium fares, and Icon-class debuts have priced accordingly — the same ship typically costs less in year two.
The bottom line
A float-out is a construction milestone, not a launch party. Hero is a year of fitting out and sea trials away from carrying a paying passenger.
For UK cruisers, the choice the Icon class now poses is a clean one: fly long-haul to Miami for the newest ship in the family from next August, or take the short flight to the Med for Legend. Britain itself is not on the map, and nothing announced this week changes that.
