Cunard is sending Queen Mary 2 into dry dock at Damen Shiprepair Brest on 31 March 2027, with a return to service on 9 May.
That is 39 days out of the water and out of the schedule, a fortnight longer than the 25-day remastering she had at Hamburg in 2016.
The most visible consequence for British passengers is the simplest one. Cunard’s 2027 voyage list for Queen Mary 2 runs January, February, March, then skips to May.
What is being done
Thirty-one new staterooms are being added. Sixteen are Cunard Princess Grill suites, the other fifteen are Britannia.
Every existing Grill Suite gets new interiors, furnishings and finishes, and new bathrooms across all Grill categories. The Queens Grill and Princess Grill restaurants are being refreshed alongside them.
Away from the suites, the work is spread across spaces everyone uses. Mareel Wellness & Beauty is being rebuilt, a new group of shops is going in, and Illuminations, the only planetarium at sea, gets a digital upgrade.
There is additional outdoor deck space, and Cunard says the deck games, paddle tennis and pickleball all stay.
The design is led by Chris Finch, one of the ship’s original designers. Katie McAlister, president of Cunard, said the line is “not reinventing what guests love about her”.
The kennels, which matter more than they sound
Queen Mary 2 carries the only dedicated kennels at sea, and they sell out on crossings well in advance.
They are being redesigned with more capacity, a refurbished owners’ lounge and a bigger outdoor walking area.
The 2016 refit took the kennels from twelve to twenty-two and demand still outruns them. If you have been quoted “fully booked” on a transatlantic crossing with a dog, spring 2027 is the date to work back from.
What this means if you are booking
The new and refreshed accommodation has been on sale since 18 May 2026, for voyages departing from May 2027.
Book a crossing between now and next March and you sail the ship as she is. Book from May 2027 and you get the refitted one, at prices set before anybody has seen it.
This is also the second capacity increase in a decade on the one ship whose selling point is space. The 2016 refit added fifty rooms; this adds thirty-one more to the same hull.
It follows the same playbook Queen Victoria gets in Rotterdam next month: new cabins, refreshed Grills, a wellness space, and no new ship on the horizon for either of them.
Cunard has partnered with the illustrator Tanu Vasu rather than issuing computer renders, on the grounds that illustration “offers an opportunity to tell a more human story”. Attractive, and harder to hold anyone to than a render.
The bottom line
Nothing is being cancelled here. The gap has been in the schedule since Carnival first flagged the refit, and the 2027 programme was built around it.
But if your habit is an April crossing, 2027 is the year it does not exist, and Southampton spends a month without the only ship that does the run as routine.
The rest is a fair deal for anyone at the Grills end, and a new spa, new shops and a better planetarium for everyone else. Whether the Britannia cabins get the same attention is the thing to ask before you book a 2027 fare on the strength of the word “refurbished”.
