Fancy a week of stand-up where the venue sails to Hamburg between shows? Virgin Voyages’ third UK Comedy Fest leaves Portsmouth on 20 August — and with three weeks to go, there’s still room aboard.
The seven-night, adults-only round trip on Valiant Lady calls at Bruges and Amsterdam with an overnight in Hamburg, carrying fifteen comedians across stand-up, improv and storytelling.
The line-up
The bill leans heavily on names you’ll know from the telly: Milton Jones of Mock the Week, Gogglebox’s Babatunde Aléshé, Lucy Beaumont and Seann Walsh headline.
Behind them: Kae Kurd, Desiree Burch, Matt Richardson, Laura Smyth, Aurie Styla, Travis Jay, pun merchant Darren Walsh, Jack Skipper, Louise Young, Ken Cheng and the Impro Allstars. No tickets, no queues — every show is included in the fare.
It’s an adults-only ship, so nobody’s working clean. Consider yourself told.
What it costs right now
We checked Virgin’s live booking pages this afternoon. An inside cabin starts at £1,052 per person and a porthole Sea View at £1,244.
Now the balcony, where Virgin’s pricing needs reading carefully. The headline “from £1,295” Sea Terrace is a Lock It In rate — £51 more than the porthole, but no changes, no modifications, and the cabin may have a limited view. You’re taking what you’re given for the discount.
A balcony you actually choose costs more: limited-view Sea Terraces from £1,310, standard ones from £1,498, and the XL — 30% more space — at £1,709. Still, £254 from window to a proper balcony is a modest step as these things go; just know which rate you’re buying.
A word on Virgin’s advertised pricing, because it trips people up: the line’s own publicity quotes per cabin (the £2,104 in its announcement is the inside for two), while most lines quote per person. Compare like with like and this sailing is more competitive than it first looks — especially since the fare includes wi-fi, all restaurants, entertainment, fitness classes, soft drinks and tips, with taxes in the displayed price.
At the top, the Mega RockStar suites have sold out; the remaining suites run £3,080 (another Lock It In — any RockStar category, their pick) to £3,920 for the Cheeky Corner with its 500-square-foot terrace.
And everything below suite level is carrying struck-through “was” prices — Virgin’s own comparisons, but a line discounting this widely three weeks from departure is a line with berths to fill, which is your negotiating position stated plainly.
The bottom line
As Stephen Mulhern’s Iona residency showed this summer, British telly names sell British sailings — and Virgin has turned filling ships with events into its entire playbook.
The difference here is the direction of travel: Mulhern’s fares climbed as his sailings filled; the Comedy Fest is discounting. For once, waiting has paid — though with the ship sailing on 20 August, the waiting is over either way.
No flights, no babysitting the kids’ sensibilities, and a fringe festival’s worth of comedy where the bar is always downstairs. If that’s your idea of a week, the balcony upgrade starts at £51 — small print attached.
