Dover Castle spent an evening as a medieval festival on 2 July, as Azamara took over the 900-year-old fortress for more than 500 cruise guests — knights, jesters and exclusive after-hours access included.
It was the second “AzAmazing” event the line has staged at the castle, with guests looking down on their ship, Azamara Journey, in the harbour below before sailing at 10pm.
The same day brought a quieter milestone on the quayside: Silversea’s Silver Spirit made her inaugural call at Dover.
A big season under the White Cliffs
Silver Spirit’s visit was the third of six maiden calls in Dover’s 2026 season, following Sapphire Princess and TUI’s Mein Schiff 2.
Next up is a notable one: Hapag-Lloyd’s EUROPA 2 — the ship that recently hosted 23 Michelin stars on one pool deck — arrives on 16 July, with Scenic Eclipse and Viking Mera following in September.
“The Port’s cruise business continues to grow strongly,” said Peter Wright, Dover’s head of cruise, crediting English Heritage and the castle team for the event.
Why Dover is having a moment
Dover is quietly assembling one of the more interesting cruise line-ups of any UK port: more than 20 lines call each year, Carnival Legend is homeporting there this summer ahead of an August eclipse voyage, and the 2026 inaugural list skews strikingly upmarket — Silversea, Hapag-Lloyd, Scenic, Viking.
The castle is a genuine differentiator. No other UK cruise port can offer lines a 900-year-old fortress overlooking the berths as an event venue — and Azamara returning for a second exclusive evening suggests the formula works.
For cruisers, transit calls like these cut both ways: a day at Dover Castle, the White Cliffs and Deal is a strong port day by any standard — and a reminder that Kent’s cruise gateway is worth watching when itineraries are chosen.
The bottom line
Southampton moves the millions, but Dover is building something different: a boutique-and-premium port with heritage no rival can match.
